Wayne Rooney and the FA, UEFA Appeal
UEFA Appeal, December 2011
Adam Lewis QC represented Wayne Rooney and the FA in successful UEFA appeal.
Blackstone Chambers' Adam Lewis QC was part of the FA's legal team to have successfully represented Wayne Rooney in his appeal to UEFA. On 8 December, Rooney's ban was reduced from three games to two (with a further one game ban suspended for 4 years).
The legal team consisted of James Bonington Head of Legal (Corporate) from The FA, Jon Ellis from Charles Russell, Swiss lawyer Antonio Rigozzi and Adam Lewis QC.
Wayne Rooney and England manager Fabio Capello also attended the hearing, alongside Club England managing director Adrian Bevington.
At first instance Wayne Rooney had been banned for three games after receiving a straight red card for committing a foul in England's final qualifier against Montenegro in October, which meant that he would have missed the entire group stage of Euro 2012. The outcome of the appeal means that he will be free to play in England's third game against Ukraine.
FA Head of Legal (Corporate), James Bonington, said: "We had a fair hearing before the UEFA Appeals Panel, and I would like to thank Adam Lewis QC, Jon Ellis and Antonio Rigozzi for the excellent support they provided in this case."
